Mangalore University Inter-Collegiate Badminton Tournament (Men & Women) 2024-25 is an
annual event hosted by one of the
colleges affiliated to Mangalore University in coordination with the Department
of Physical Education, Mangalore University. This year, Father Muller College (Department of Speech & Hearing) was requested to take the
lead and organize the event. The two-day tournament held on the 18th & 19th October,
2023 at Father Muller Indoor Stadium, a testament to athleticism and
sportsmanship, brought together a plethora of budding badminton talents from
various colleges affiliated to Mangalore University. The event was coordinated by Mr
Chandrashekara S. N. (Physical Education Instructor,
FMC), Mrs. Sushma K. R. (Physical Education
Instructor, FMC), Mr Pancham Ponnana
and Dr. Prashasti Poovaiah (Sports Coordinators, FMC) under the guidance
of Rev. Fr Richard Aloysius Coelho (Director,
FMCI), Rev. Fr George Jeevan
Sequeira (Administrator, FMMCH), Rev. Fr Donald Nilesh Crasta (Asst Administrator, FMMCH), Rev. Fr Ajith B. Menezes (Administrator, FMMC),
and Prof. Cynthia Santhmayor (Principal, FMC).
The tournament commenced with a
captivating inaugural ceremony graced by the distinguished presence of the
esteemed Chief Guest Dr Latheesh Leo, Professor, Dept. of Orthopaedics, FMMCH, and
President of the ceremony, Rev. Fr Richard Aloysius Coelho (Director, FMCI), Dr. Haridas Kuloor, Assistant
Director of Physical Education at Mangalore University, along with the
Principal and Physical Directors. Prof. Cynthia Santhmayor (Principal, FMC) welcomed the gathering which was followed
by the lamp lighting ceremony. Following this was the Chief Guest's and the Presidential
Address. The Chief Guest, Dr Latheesh Leo emphasized on the importance of
sports in fitness and how it helps us live a healthy life. Rev. Fr Richard
Aloysius Coelho in his presidential address, articulated the significance of
sports in holistic education. The opening ceremony was concluded with the vote
of thanks delivered by Mr
Pancham Ponnana, the sports coordinator.
A total of 267 participants across 32
colleges under the affiliation of Mangalore University participated in the
tournament. Among them, 32 men's teams and 26 women's teams took part in the knock-out preliminary
round on October 18th, 2024. On October 19th, 2024 the
championship rounds were held between
the semi-finalists of the preliminary round held the previous day and
semi-finalists of the championship
round of the previous year 2023-24. A total of 8 men's teams and 8 women's teams participated in the championship round. Alongside this, the university trials were also conducted
on the 19th of October, 2024.
The tournament showcased exceptional
talent and competitive spirit among the participants. The players displayed
impeccable techniques, swift footwork and tactical prowess throughout the
matches.
The closing ceremony of the
tournament took place on October 19th, 2024. Prof. Cynthia
Santhumayor (Principal FMC), Dr Gerald Santhosh DSouza (Director, Department of
Physical Education, Mangalore University), Dr. Haridas Kuloor (Assistant
Director, Department of Physical Education, Mangalore University), Mr
Chandrashekhara S. N. & Mrs. Sushma K N (Physical Education Instructors,
FMC), Mr Pancham Ponnana and Dr. Prashasti Poovaiah (Sports Coordinators, FMC) were
present for the valedictory ceremony. Prof. Cynthia Santhmayor and Dr Gerald
DSouza spoke a few words congratulating all the players, winners as well as the
participants and appreciated the organizers, following which Mr Chandrashekhara
concluded the formal ceremony with a vote of thanks. The prizes were then
distributed to the winners of the badminton tournament.

The rolling trophy 'Sri Kemmara Balakrishna Gowda Memorial Trophy for Men' was bagged by Alva's College, Moodbidri.
